a note from the founders
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
~ Maya Angelou
We’re delighted that your curiosity brought you here. If you’re wondering about the name Ulom, it means “my home” in the Nigerian Igbo language. We are two self-taught interior design curators and Nigerian-American sisters born in Houston, Texas. We’ve always enjoyed creativity, style and design that was meaningful to us, but we never considered that people would want to incorporate what we did into their own spaces. We were raised by immigrant parents and grew up in a community with interesting cultural dynamics that have influenced our design style. We have an affinity for subtle nods to patterned art and textured design that we like to infuse into spaces that are clean and uncluttered. We believe our aesthetic brings warmth to sterile spaces and refines over-designed interiors. Our focus is on achieving a balanced style that is elevated, but comfortable and layered, yet visually and experientially calming.
Some have called us organic modern because of how we use materials but we really don’t have a name to define our work. We mix different styles all the time to achieve something inviting, elevated and unique to each client. The right balance can cultivate a peaceful experience without sacrificing style or culture. We truly believe that the places you work, reside and frequent on a temporary or long term basis should feel like your home — a place of elevated comfort for relaxation and productivity.
We know we’ll continue to evolve as designers; however, we also want you to give in to the design process and be open to trying things that may depart from what you’re used to. Design projects cannot thrive without a little bit of faith, trust, and at times experimentation, extended to people you have likely never met or designed with before. What an ask! But as we journey with you in design — whether you are here for our design work, trade tips, or just sheer curiosity — our hope is that our engagement with you is productive and refreshing. If we have helped you to re-envision your interiors, clear space and bring peaceful vibes to your environment, then mission accomplished.
We look forward to sharing our design experiences with you.
